Exerting Power

Exerting Power

In non-verbal communication space = power, thus the more of your body you are exposing the more power you are displaying.  Think back to our caveman ancestors, if you were crouched in a corner your enemy would not hesitate to conquer you but the person who stands with hands on hips showing total vulnerablity and yet exerting full power is more intimidating.

EVENT: Young Entrepreneur Panel

EVENT: Young Entrepreneur Panel
I was delighted in January 2015 to receive an invitation from the US Embassy Luxembourg to participate in their panel at their Young Entrepreneur Pitch event.

The event is very well managed with an outreach to schools and colleges throughout Luxembourg to encourage youth to participate.  Now in many countries getting the participation of young people to a programme like this may not be an issue, however, in Luxembourg the culture is not particularly Entrepreneur positive.  Although things are changing.

If you are reading this blog outside of Luxembourg, you may question why this is so.  The country is small and primarily the locals are employed in Government or Governement related organisations and the European Union.  Foreigners are typically mostly employed in corporate banking or the financial sector, more recently there is a growing trend towards technology.  Where does that leave Entrepreneurs?  Well on the back burner.

Things have been changing but I see little indication that Entrepreneurship will become as significant in Luxembourg as it is in the USA for example.  So, I believe, that programmes like this are important, because they open new avenues of thinking for young people.  I say this especially in the light of the fact that young people today and int he future there are less likely to be jobs waiting for young people and entrepreneurship may be the only avenue open to them.

What's it all mean?

What's it all mean?

Before we get started on discussing specifics on non-verbal communication let's put out some definitions to help you better understand the language that is connected to this discipline.

Non-verbal communications is the process of communication through sending and receiving wordless (mostly visual) cues between people.  It is sometimes mistakenly referred to as body language (kinesics), in truth non-verbal communication encompasses much more. Many of these disciplines are increasingly based on scientific research and analysis such as the use of voice (paralanguage), touch (haptics), distance (proxemics) and includes our physical environment and appearance.  There is a correlation between non-verbal communication and meta-communication.

Communicate without saying a word

Communicate without saying a word

We all do it, we all see it, we all recognise it and yet we're mostly not aware that we do it, see it or consciously understand it, and that is non-verbal communication or often called body language.  I prefer the term non-verbal communication as we convey communication with our breathing, voice, eyes, legs, hands, mouth nose ... basically every part of us communicates if we are prepared to look and listen.

It's been a topic that I've been interested in for many years and I'll be sharing some of this information and how it can help you in business and life.
